Korean Hip-Hop and R&B Corner – June

Summer is officially here my dear readers! I hope you’ve been enjoying our monthly chats where I bring you information on all things Korean hip-hop and R&B.  The first thing I’d like to mention is that I’ll be attending KCON NY this year so if you see a tall woman with red hair, wearing a Fedora hat, that’s me! Please let me know if you’ll be traveling to the NJ/NYC area for KCON and who you’re excited to see. Can you believe Zion.T is coming? I’m still in shock.

This month we are all about the songs that get you in the mood for summer, which artist is emptying our wallets with the announcements of tours and what happens when something gets lost in translation.

SMTM6 Cypher

Oh man, I was hyped when this MV came out! Last month we talked about the producer line up and I mentioned how excited I was to actually watch season 6 of Show Me The Money (SMTM). On May 19th Mnet released the producer cypher. For those who don’t know, a cypher (or cipher) is when a group of rappers stand around and well…rap. Sometimes the artists’ freestyle but I think this cypher was written beforehand.

Here is when being an international Korean music fan gets difficult. I found myself nodding along to the music and the bit of Korean I knew helped but… I really wish I knew what they were saying. In American hip-hop cyphers, the main enjoyment for me is to listen to the lyrics and decide whether I vibe, or agree with what the artist is saying.

In the SMTM6 Cypher, however, I could only just nod and hope that someone said a line or two in English. Now, this doesn’t mean that I want them to only rap in English, quite the contrary. I wish my Korean language skills were good enough to be able to fully appreciate what they are saying.

Which of the producer groups did you like during this cypher? Are you still looking forward to this airing (it starts June 30th)? Let me know in the comments below!

Song of the Month

I know that this song is no longer considered new but allow me to fangirl. OH MY GOSH THIS SONG IS AMAZING AND PERFECT FOR SUMMER! Thank you. I’m not sure when Dean sleeps because when he isn’t on tour (you may remember he just completed a tour with Club Eskimo around North America) he’s creating amazing songs like this. Dean released the song “Love” with American singer Syd May 19th and I have not been able to get this song out of my head. Syd’s breathy melodic voice pairs beautifully with Dean’s smooth vocals. The beat makes you automatically bob your head and wish for a day at the beach. At least, that’s how I feel. Listen to this amazing song (the MV itself is blocked in North American for some reason) and join the Dean and Syd train with me!
