SXSW 2017 – K-pop Night Out Announcement

Yesterday, South by Southwest (SXSW) announced the line up for their K-pop Night Out showcase. And the 5th anniversary of the K-pop Night Out showcase (at the festival) is fan-freaking-tastic!

I’m not just saying that because I like four of the six artists/groups, or because I’ve seen some of them before (and know they rock), or even because two of them are at the top of the list of musicians I’ve never seen live but really, really, really want to see. Nope, it’s not for any of those reasons – legit though they are – that I think this lineup is amazing.

The real reason? Have you looked at the list of acts in this showcase? It’s the artists!

Hyperbole and personal feelings for the musicians aside, it’s a fabulous lineup of great talent. It doesn’t matter what your musical preference is – punk, hip hop, pop, rock – there is an act or two (or six) that you’re going to love. In fact, I would be surprised if you don’t already love at least a couple of the musicians already. The lineup is just that good.

The K-pop Night Out showcase will be on Friday, March 17th at The Belmont, and it will be an 18+ event. For more details, check out the announcement. For more info on the musicians, keep reading!

Drunken Tiger x Yoonmirae

In my mind, this is the headliner of this lineup. Oh, I have no idea what the actual order of the acts will be but Drunken Tiger and Yoonmirae together on stage will be something amazing. Like blow your mind amazing. Sure, I’m biased as I’ve liked them together and individually for years but just a quick look at their careers and discography should confirm how epic this act will be. Curious about them, we interviewed them a while ago.

No Brain

As I’ve written about No Brain several times before, including about their past performances at SXSW, it’s probably not a surprise that I’ve excited to see them back at the festival. And as much as I like their music (they released two albums recently that you should check out), watching them perform live, that’s another level. They are mind-blowingly awesome – so much energy and passion. So I’m happy that we’ll all have another chance to see them at SXSW. Want to know more, we interviewed them a while ago.

Red Velvet

While I’ll be the first to admit that I know little about them other than my K-pop loving friends like them, and that Wendy went to high school in one of Toronto’s suburbs. But after watching a couple of their MVs, K-pop fans have to be happy that they’re listed in this lineup.

Big Phony

While I introduced Big Phony earlier in our round one announcement, I definitely recommend checking him out if you haven’t already. Plus he announced on his Facebook that he’ll be returning to SXSW with a full band this time.

Galaxy Express

This award-winning alt-rock band is coming back to SXSW and that’s exciting. They top my list of bands I can’t wait to see live and you should definitely check out their last two albums, Walking on Empty and the self-titled, Galaxy Express – both of which are great.

Hyolyn

As both the leader of the girl group Sistar and a solo artist, Hyolyn (Hyorin) is someone to watch. She’ll be bringing her sexy star power to the K-pop Night Out showcase.

Final Thoughts

This is an amazing lineup of artists for the 5th anniversary of the K-pop Night Out showcase at SXSW. And it’s not just me that’s saying that, the excitement the lineup is generating since yesterday’s announcement is phenomenal. And while I can’t decide who I’m most excited about – No Brain, Galaxy Express, or Drunken Tiger x Yoonmirae – that’s just because there’s just so much fabulous talent there.

What do you think of this year’s K-pop Night Out lineup at SXSW? Who are you most excited for?
