BLΛƆKPIИK (블랙핑크) is the long-awaited “YG New Girl Group” from YG Entertainment. The members have made appearances in other YG releases before their debut; like Jennie in G-Dragon’s “That XX” and Jisoo in Epik High’s “Happen Ending.” The anticipation for their debut has been building for years—so much so that their pre-debut dance practice video has almost 10,000,000 views on YouTube.

Their concept is different from most K-pop girl groups. A YG rep said, “The meaning of Black Pink aims to contradict the common perception of the color pink. Pink is commonly used to portray prettiness, but Black Pink actually means to say that ‘Pretty isn’t everything’. It also symbolizes that they are a team that encompasses not only beauty, but also great talent.”

And beauty is certainly something that they have…

Releases

On August 8, BLACKPINK’s debut single “Square One” was released. It received massive amounts of attention worldwide. They topped both worldwide and Korean charts with their debut. “Square One” features two tracks with a hip-hop, electronic sound.

Square One

1.” 휘파람 WHISTLE”

“휘파람 WHISTLE”, the first track of the album, is a catchy, almost psychedelic sounding song. The chorus, accompanied by whistling in the background, “hwi param param param” is a play on the Korean word for “whistle”, which sounds like “hwiparam.” “휘파람WHISTLE” won SBS Inkigayo on August 21 and was in the top songs on the Gaon Digital Chart for two consecutive weeks.

2. BOOMBAYAH

BOOMBAYAH is a catchy, electronic dance track with a prominent drum beat. While “WHISTLE” (휘파람) was #1 in Korea, BOOMBAYAH was the most popular overseas. The song opens with Jennie singing, “BLACKPINK in your area”, which has become a famous line among K-pop fans.

BLACKPINK certainly stands out with their amazing dance moves and stunning voices. They know how to capture their audience’s hearts. I can’t wait to see what’s next for BLACKPINK. As for now, they’ve finished promoting their debut and have recently been in a few modeling campaigns, including a photo shoot for REEBOK. BLACKPINK is here and they were definitely worth the wait!

Final Thoughts

What did you think of BLACKPINK’s debut? Which song from “Square One” is your favorite? Is there a member of BLACKPINK that you love? (I really like Jisoo personally.)

  1. I really like all of the members, but Rose is standing out for me. She’s actually the feature artist in G-Dragon’s Without You/결국 (Finally), from his “One Of A Kind” solo album. I really enjoy her hair flips too! 🙂

  2. Lisa is my bias 🙂 Can’t wait for their next comeback
