Editorial: Music I’m Listening To, A New Series

Like many people, I’m often influenced by some of the things I read or hear and the conversations I have. Luckily, this doesn’t mean I buy random things from infomercials but rather, that my writing can often be influenced, shaped or otherwise inspired by normal things in my life. Now this isn’t anything new or earth-shattering; most writers, musicians, filmmakers and other creative people are often influenced by things around them. And the same holds true with me, in my creative writing, personal blogging and to a lesser extent, the articles I write for ATK Magazine.

But recently, I was reading an article on Korean Indie (one of the websites I regularly read) and Chris was making some great points about Korean indie music and why we don’t see more of it in North America. It also made me realize that I wasn’t writing as much about music as I wanted, nor in all the ways I wanted to. Oh, don’t get me wrong, I still write regularly about music – interviews with bands and musicians, reviews of concerts and shows, previews of who’s coming to festivals, etc. – but I wasn’t doing two things I wanted to do as much as I wanted or should.

Namely, album reviews and simply writing about music I like and listen to. Basically, sharing my favourite bands, songs, MVs and more with you.

So that’s going to change starting today. I’m starting a new monthly column about music I like… called “Music I Listen To” for a variety of reasons, but mostly because talking about music is fun and I often get asked about who I listen to and/or who I recommend, especially when it comes to Korean indie music. Today’s column will be a little different from the others as it’s more of an editorial and introduction but moving forward, I’ll introduce a band or solo artist each month that I not only recommend you check out (if you haven’t already) but one that I regularly listen to. Because why would I recommend a musician or group if I don’t actually like and listen to them?

I used to do more of this with “top 10s” but… there’s no time like the present to start again.

So what can you expect?

Like I said, each month I’ll feature a band or musician who I like. I’ll introduce them, give you some examples of their music that I particularly like via YouTube videos (when available and they generally are), let you know how you can find them and of course, how you can buy their music. And if they have any tours coming up, we’ll mention that too. Nothing we haven’t done before, I’m simply going to start talking about bands I like again.

Who will I write about?

At the start, I’m going to try to alternate between bands I’ve been listening to for ages (and still love) and bands I have only recently fallen in love with. All will be Korean indie or hip hop. Sorry, nothing I would classify as K-pop. Not that I don’t listen to some K-pop (it’s a well-known fact that I have a thing for Big Bang, lol) but there’s lots out there already about it (plus we have K-pop writers at ATK who write similar articles) so I will concentrate on who makes my playlists regularly.

Final Thoughts

I’ve already picked the first two bands I’m going to feature and I can’t wait to share them with you! And no, you don’t have to wait until October, the first “Music I Listen To” article will be out later this month. In the meantime, I’m going to leave you with a couple of songs that have been in my summer playlist, well… all summer. Oh and if you want to recommend a band, just leave a comment below. You know we love to hear from you!

Five songs I can’t stop listening to this summer

“My Leather Jacket (내 가죽잠바)” by No Brain

“Dream Catcher” by Nell

“On My Own (선택)” by ironic HUE

“Genuine” by Bye Bye Badman

“Trying” by WYM

I know I’m just sharing music videos this time but… they are great songs so give them a listen. Moving forward the articles will be more in depth.

What are you listening to this summer?

This is exciting! I really do discover more amazing music through ATK. Nell’s Dream Catcher is already on my playlist now since i found it on Spotify. I’ll be listening to these other songs as well! 🙂 Looking forward to this editorial!
