One of the biggest draws to KCON is the promise of a fantastic, idol-filled concert, the likes of which most fans will never be able to experience anywhere else in the world. As fans flocked to Newark, New Jersey this past weekend, expectations among those in attendance was high. And for good reason.
With a lineup that included Ailee, BtoB, Seventeen, Crush, and Dynamic Duo, Friday night’s concert had made good on that promise, giving those in attendance an evening the would never forget. With so many in attendance harboring fond memories of KCON NY’s first concert, expectations for Saturday’s concert skyrocketed. However, with a lineup that included Eric Nam, Mamamoo, DAY6 and BTS, meeting those expectations wasn’t going to be a problem.
KCON NY – Day 2 Concert
As he had done the previous night, Danny Im opened the evening’s concert with a hearty welcome and a warm introduction of the evening’s opening act, JuNCurryAhn. Having seen JuNCurryAhn perform at previous KCONs I’ve become somewhat of a follower of his so watching him perform his covers of the Descendants of the Sun theme song and BTS’ “Fire” in person was a treat.
Of course the real excitement of the evening began as the arena lights dimmed and Rap Monster and Ailee took to the stage to welcome everyone to the second night of KCON NY. As was the case the night before, the mere presence of Ailee and Rap Monster was enough to send the audience into a frenzy and the energy remained high as Mamamoo kicked off the evening.
I must admit, I had a moment when Mamamoo made their grand entrance. I have spent years admiring these four incredibly talented women and have always wished I could see them perform in person so to have that wish become a reality was a literal dream come true. Watching Mamamoo perform all my favorite songs on-stage was one of those moments I’ll never forget.
With Mamamoo’s set over, it was Eric Nam’s turn to take the stage and I have to say, that boy knows how to make an entrance. Opening his set with a special video, it was as if Eric Nam walked straight out off the screens and into the unsuspecting audience, toting the exact same bouquet of bright red roses he’d been carrying on-screen. Strolling his way through the excited crowd, Nam handed out roses and smiles as he made his way onto the stage.
Enamoured by such a grand entrance, the entire audience swooned over Eric Nam’s rich voice. Having made several appearances at KCON in the past, Nam is no stranger to those of us who’ve attended past conventions but seeing him step beyond the role of an MC and into the role of a performer gave me a whole new appreciation for him as an entertainer. Oozing charisma, Nam not only wooed the crowd with his voice but entertained us all with his killer smile, hilarious sense of humor and undeniably powerful stage presence.
Leaving the crowd in such high spirits, the energy in the arena was high as DAY6 took the stage and again I found myself having a moment. JYP’s rookie band has been a personal favorite of mine since their debut and having seen them in Toronto just over a month ago, I knew we were all in for a treat. What I didn’t know was that seeing DAY6 perform on a stage in front of thousands upon thousands of people would make me see them in a whole new light. Far removed from the intimate setting of a cozy little fanmeet, DAY6 took on the role of rock star performers and filled that role so well, thousands of us were sent reeling. With such a lethal a combination of powerful vocals and undeniable talent, DAY6 won more than a few hearts over that evening.
Wrapping up their set with a collection of covers that included CNBLUE’s “I’m a Loner” and the Wonder Girls’ “Nobody” (with the help of the ever-amazing Mamamoo), DAY6 took the already ecstatic crowd to a whole new level of hyped. As the lights dimmed on DAY6, Ailee and Eric Nam returned to the stage to treat us all to a rare yet beautiful duet. The unexpected delight of seeing two stellar artists performing together brought the audience to a new level of delight and was the perfect segue into the evening’s most highly anticipated act. As the lights dimmed and the stage emptied, the entire audience jumped to their feet, their excitement barely contained as the moment we’d all been waiting for was finally upon us.
With cheers and screams ringing throughout the area, BTS, exploded onto the stage and with more charisma than any seven young men should ever possess, they lit the place on fire. As tens of thousands of voices joined in song, the group’s hard-hitting lyrics shook the rafters. Moving from one fan-favorite to another, each song transported the audience to a whole new level of euphoria, the emotions among the fans running so high tears began to flow. Feeding off the energy in the room, BTS brought down the house with a performance that will not soon be forgotten.
To end the night on such a high was both brilliant and painful as the desire to stay in that moment for the rest of forever was felt by more than just myself. To leave us all on such a high, allowing us to walk away with such happy memories, it’s the best way to ensure we’ll all be back for more and more is what we all want… more artists, more memories, more fun, more KCON.
