Everyone has a bias group in the K-pop world. Every fan girl (or boy) has to survive their bias’ comeback and it is not an easy task. Mine happens to be BTS, otherwise known as Bangtan Boys (방탄소년단) and they recently made a comeback with their new mini album “The Most Beautiful Moments in Life Pt. 2” (화양연화 Pt. 2). Their title track was ‘Run’ which was supposed to represent youth in a sad but yet upbeat and exciting way.
The Music Videos
To us ARMYs, the title track represented more than just the story of youth. The previous title track’s (‘I Need U’) music video of the last mini album “The Most Beautiful Moments in Life Pt. 1” (화양연화 Pt. 1) started a story that didn’t make much sense. During the break between albums, a teaser for ‘Butterfly’ (a song that was in the newer album) came with a story MV called the ‘Prologue’. At the end of ‘Prologue’ there was a picture that was taken earlier during the video with one of the members missing (Yoongi) from the picture while the other (Jin) was still there. The one that was still in the photo (Jin) seemed to be the only one left there in the end.
This caused many theories to begin and grow. It got worst after BigHit (BTS’s entertainment company) took down ‘Prologue’ and re-uploaded it without the mysterious ending. ‘Prologue’ also seemed to have a connection between ‘I Need U’ and ‘Run’. Therefore people patiently waited for ‘Run’ to come out and help solve the story for us but alas, it just got us more confused.
In ‘I Need U’ it seemed like Jin was the one left “alive” (while the others committed suicide) but in ‘Run’ it seems like Jin is the one who “died” and the others are alive. But it’s very possible that no one died at all. Therefore this threw the whole fandom into a tizzy into finding out what is the truth. They’ve come up with theories such as the Neverland/Peter Pan theory, The Butterfly Effect theory, The Jin’s in a mental hospital theory and many more. This was just one of many things we had to survive in this comeback.
BTS had their comeback around the same time as their The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: On Stage concert in Korea, which took place from November 27th – 30th. The MV and album were released on November 29th but the boy band already performed some of the songs at their concert, so the fans that were lucky enough to go got to hear the songs and watch the performances before the rest of us. Apparently they even saw an extended version of the music video, which still hasn’t been officially revealed yet.
So us international fans and unlucky fans in Korea were in pain from trying to avoid all the pictures and videos of the concert that were all over the social media sites. I caved in and saw part of the dance and part of the extended version of the MV but I really tried to stay away. I guess I just had to see them and I was too impatient to wait a couple of days.
When the MV came out, it got 2 million views in 24 hours combining the views of the MV on the 1TheK YouTube channel and the official BigHit YouTube channel. Because of their title song release, their old title song ‘I Need U’ started rising in the charts again. Their album also ranked 13th on the iTunes Worldwide Albums Chart on Dec 2nd, which is an amazing feat as they’re currently the highest ranked Asian artist (but not the highest ever). Their pre-orders for the new album even sold more than 150,000 copies in Korea and internationally. All tracks from the new album were on the Gaon and World Digital charts. All of these milestones were amazing and beautiful things for us ARMYs and BTS to witness.

Even with all the amazing achievements we were still worried that BTS wouldn’t win any music shows. Because BTS came back a couple of days before the MAMA (Mnet Asian Music Awards) awards, BTS couldn’t participate in any music shows yet, therefore their first comeback stage (other than the concert) was at MAMA. I live streamed MAMA and I have to say the whole show was amazing, including the first stage of their song ‘Run’. Many ARMYs felt like Mnet did not give BTS the stage they deserved but BTS won the Worldwide Performance Award, which made us a little happier and proud that BTS is finally being recognized for being an amazing group.
At the Music Shows
After MAMA they started going on music shows but since it was still early, they weren’t winning any shows. Sadly, they had to go to Japan for their concert tour there. Therefore the music shows showed pre-recordings of their new song. While they were in Japan, they won their first win for ‘Run’ on SBS’s The Show which was amazing because we all thought it was still too early to be winning music shows. They got their second win on MBC’s Show Champion but they were still in Japan. They finally came back to Korea and appeared on KBS’s Music Bank and got their third win there! The boys looked so happy, therefore we were so happy and they even did an “adult” version of ‘Run’ for their encore stage. All the members looked touched by their trophy, especially Yoongi who eyes it like it is his girlfriend. It was a great way to start my morning that day.
They are still continuing promotions and we hope that they will win more music shows before EXO takes over the charts. So the best of luck to them! Bangtansonyeondan Fighting~
