K-dramas are notorious for their swoon-worthy male leads. Rich, stand-offish, unapproachable leads with a hidden soft-spot or a secret wound are the stuff male drama leads are made of. They’re wonderful fodder for the K-drama fangirl but as wonderfully dreamy as male leads are, it’s the second male lead that usually ends up with my heart. There’s just something about an adorable second that gets to me every. stinking. time. Despite the fact these adorably lovable seconds always end up breaking my heart, I can’t help but fall for them over and over again. So here’s a list of the top five second leads that failed to win the affection of their female lead but managed to capture my heart completely.

Yoon Ji Hoo (Kim Hyun Joong, 김현중), Boys Over Flowers (꽃보다 남자)

Like so many drama watchers, Boys Over Flowers (꽃보다 남자) was one of the first dramas I ever watched and Ji Hoo was one of the first seconds I ever swooned over. His quiet charms were irresistible and it killed me that Jan Di chose the brash Joon Pyo over her soulmate, Ji Hoo. To this day I can’t figure out what the heck she was thinking!

Kang Shin Woo (Jung Yong Hwa, 정용화), You’re Beautiful (미남이시네요)

Sweet, adorable, guitar-playing idol superstar Kang Shin Woo was my very first second lead love and to this day I consider him far superior to Hwang Tae Kyung. My only consolation, when it comes to Shin Woo, is knowing that with Go Mi Nyeo wrapped up in Tae Kyung, Shin Woo is free for the taking. Thank you Mi Nyeo! Thank you!

Choi Young Do (Kim Woo Bin, 김우빈), Heirs (왕관을 쓰려는 자, 그 무게를 견뎌라 – 상속자들)

Sometimes a second lead steals your heart and breaks it, all at the same time and Choi Young Do is just such a second. His tough exterior was such an obvious front to the wounded puppy hidden on the inside and my heart immediately went out to him. I’d happily put up with his “tough guy” crap if it meant I was the one who had the privilege of helping heal his wounded heart.

Chilbongie (Yoo Yeon Seok, 유연석), Answer Me 1994 (응답하라 1994)

It’s been well over a year since Answer Me 1994 (응답하라 1994) first aired and to this day I can’t think of Chilbongie without feeling like my heart is being ripped out of my chest. I fell for this poor boy, hook, line and sinker and it absolutely KILLS ME that he was passed over for the likes of Trash Oppa. Don’t get me wrong, Trash Oppa had his charms but Chilbongie, in all of his adorable wonderfulness, will always be far superior in my book.

David Choi (Lee Jang Woo, 이장우), Pretty Man (예쁜남자)

David was the type of second who complimented his female lead so well, you wondered how the heck they never managed to work out. David’s quirkiness matched Bo Tong’s own quirky personality so well; they just seemed destined to be together. The fact that David was a total sweetheart while Ma Tae was a conceited jerk only made David that much more lovable and it killed me to see David thrown an odd-ball consolation girl at the end. I can only hope this crazy girl can somehow bring David the happiness he deserves.

There are so many more worthy second leads I could swoon over but these five have found a special place in my heart. What I want to know is, which second leads have you swooning? Let me know in the comments below!
