I’M GOING TO KOREA!! Okay, sorry for shouting but I’m so very, very excited. You see, I lived in Korea for 3 years and loved my time there. But I haven’t been back to Korea in the 4 ½ years since I moved back to Toronto. 4 ½ years! I’m just beside myself with happiness. And it’s not just a vacation; it’s the most fabulous, wonderful, exciting business trip ever.
Side note: if you don’t want to read an article with tons and tons of super glowing adjectives that just gush excitement… stop reading now! Because this post is going to sound like I bottled all the fast-talking exhilaration of a teenager who’s just met her favourite idol and the absolute pleasure of an adult who’s just landed her dream job. I’m a positive, happy person normally but right now I’m just giddy and it’s seeping into my writing. I’ll try to lay off the exclamation points though. ^^
First of all, I want to send a huge thanks to the Korean Tourism Organization (KTO) for selecting me for this wonderful Hallyu-inspired trip. And a special thanks to the Toronto office of the KTO for recommending me! Thanks, thanks, thanks!
And while I can’t take you with me… I can share with you all of the wonderful things I will be doing. Because this is a jam-packed trip filled with wonderful, exciting things that will just be a joy to write about. The KTO have planned a fabulous whirlwind trip that highlights some of the best of Hallyu-inspired tourism and activities you can experience in Seoul.
So I’ve packed my laptop and camera (or will in a couple of days) in order to share all the super-duper fun and adventure we will be having with you each night. I can’t (and won’t) promise long posts each night but I will promise a short update and some pictures. And of course, once I get home… more will follow.
Now I don’t know all the details of the trip but I’m arriving a day early and spending it in my favourite place in Seoul – Hongdae – in a K-pop inspired hostel. Don’t laugh but as soon as I saw it, I booked a room because it will make for a funtastic (hehe, I love combining words) article. I’m also hoping to meet up with some friends too.
The official part of the trip is from Sunday afternoon until the next Saturday and will include entertaining activities like seeing a taping of Show Champion (cool!), going to a K-pop dance school (I love dancing!), a makeover & photo-shoot (love, love, love makeup! but nervous about the photo part of it), Lotte World (tehe, I used to live very close to it & loved walking around Seokchon Lake), and my favourite part… Hongdae! Hey, I did say I loved Hongdae! The clubs, the music, the shopping, the food… there’s just so much incredible stuff to do there.
I’ve been bouncing with excitement since I was offered this phenomenal opportunity. Literally! My nickname in high school was “Tigger” because I couldn’t sit still long and had to be constantly moving and if I got excited, I would actually bounce. I don’t do it as much anymore (boo, adulthood) but when something this marvelous comes along, I just can’t contain myself.
And I’ll be honest with you all, as absolutely magnificent as the trip is, I’m just excited about heading back to Korea. There is just so much I miss about Korea – my friends, the food, the shopping, teaching & some of my great students, Q-vo (my fav club in Hongdae) – that I know I won’t be able to fit everything I want to do into the one extra day beforehand and the one afterwards. Did I mention my friends?! The only downer is I know I won’t be able to see everyone but I’m heading back for a longer trip in 2014 so if I miss you… let’s meet then!
Oh, and there is one more absolutely marvelous and mind-blowingly fantastic thing! A friend heard that I was coming and invited me to her wedding on Sunday! Two members of Say Kimchi, the Korean-English language exchange club I run, are getting married in Seoul and I feel privileged to attend. ^^
With all these stupendous, unbelievably wonderful things to do… this is going to be a trip of a lifetime!! Thanks again KTO for the fantabulous opportunity! ^^
