My Favourite Korean Songs of 2012

Happy New Year’s!! I hope that you all enjoyed a lovely Christmas with your family, friends or loved ones! And for those of you that don’t celebrate Christmas, I hope you are having a fantastic last week of 2012. I’ve had fun eating lots of turkey and cookies with my family but it’s time to get back to writing my “favourites of 2012” posts. This one is all about my favourite songs of 2012. Please feel free to agree or disagree!

It’s no secret that I listen to a lot of Korean music and a fairly wide variety of it, not just K-pop. And it’s also no secret that I absolutely adore Big Bang. I’m a bit crazy about them, it’s true. 2012 was a fab year for a Big Bang fan – new album (or rather two – Alive and Still Alive) and a world tour (I was so excited to catch their New Jersey concert) – but it was also a great year for other K-pop and Korean music fans. Lots of new music, songs, music videos and concerts.

This was a fun post to write but super hard to narrow it down to my 10 favourite Korean songs of 2012. So much great music! And no, Gangnam Style is not on my list (although I did buy the album for my mom for Christmas). The songs are in no particular order. ^^

Here’s my 10 Favourite Korean Songs of 2012

Fantastic Baby – Big Bang (빅뱅)

I love this song and every time I listen to it I can’t help dancing. While I liked it from the start, this is one of those songs that I like more and more, the more I listen to it. It’s so much fun!

Bad Boy – Big Bang (빅뱅)

The first time I listened to Alive, the album Bad Boy (along with Fantastic Baby and Blue) is from, I put Bad Boy on repeat and I’m still listening to it. It is my favourite song from the album and probably my favourite of the year (although Crayon is up there too).

Blue – Big Bang (빅뱅)

So filled with emotion, it’s hard not to love Blue! This song was a bit different for Big Bang but I love when they test their boundaries.

Crayon – G Dragon

Crayon probably has one of the craziest videos of the year but that’s part of the fun. I love G Dragon, so much talent. I can’t wait to dance to this song in a club.

Let This Die (너 따윈 버리고) – Brian Joo (브라이언) Feat. Tiger JK (타이거 JK)

While I love both this version – which is the Korean version – and the English version with Flowsik from Aziatix, it just sounds a little better in Korean (although it’s easier for me to sing the English version).

I Can Do It (할수있어) – MC Sniper

MC Sniper’s 2012 album Full Time rocks and I Can Do It is definitely my favourite song of the album (which is saying a lot).

Don’t Hate Me – Epic High (에픽하이)

Such a fun MV and the song just makes me dance. Love it! So happy to hear new music from Epic High.

When I Can’t Sing (내가 노래를 못해도) – Se7en

Such a sweet song, I often listen to Se7en and this song in particular when I’m writing/working on my novel as it helps my words flow.

Know Your Name (acoustic version) – Jay Park

I love this song and think (for me at least) that the acoustic version is just a touch better than the dance version (although I love Dok2’s rap in it). Plus the MV is super sweet and the kiss at the end is dreamy.

Beautiful Stranger – Nell (넬)

I love, love, love this song and so does my phone as it seems to automatically default to Nell (and this song in particular) when I turn on my music app. I highly recommend their 2012 album Slip Away, which Beautiful Stranger is from.

And since there were so many great songs, here are some others that I loved. I can’t wait to see what 2013 brings!

The rest of my favourite songs from 2012

SuperSonic – Younha (고윤하)

As you might have guessed, I’m not a big fan of female voices but while reviewing the album this song is from (also named SuperSonic), I fell in love with this song. [Sorry, couldn’t find a MV]

The Day Before (그리고 남겨진 것들) – Nell (넬)

I’m a huge Nell fan and this song is simple beautiful.

Without You (거기서 거기) – Dynamic Duo (다이나믹 듀오)

I’ve been a fan of Dynamic Duo since I discovered Korean music in 2006/2007 and I’ve definitely added this song to my list of favs.

? (물음표) – Primary (프라이머리) Feat. Choiza (최자) of Dynamic Duo (다이나믹듀오) and Zion T

This is a cool video but also an amazing rap/hip hop song.

I Love You – 2NE1

The only girl group I really like – 2NE1 – consistently puts out great songs and this is my favourite of theirs from 2012.

Warrior (워리어) – B.A.P (비에이피)

I really don’t listen to B.A.P but a friend introduced me to this MV and I couldn’t stop listening to the song (the MV is neither good nor bad but I love the song).

You Deserve Better (Beautiful Enough) (충분히 예) – Verbal Jint (버벌진트)

I just started listening to Verbal Jint recently and I’ve become a fan. This is my favourite of their songs.

Please don’t… (이러지마 제발) – K.will (케이윌)

Another new discover in 2012 for me, I love this song.

Venus – Shinhwa (신화)

So happy they’re back!

Do you agree with me? What were your favourite songs of 2012?
